- Power. Power controls your height.

- Nose down, nose up. Up arrow lowers the nose, exactly like pushing a real yoke away from you. Pitch controls your speed.

- Roll. Twenty degrees of bank is the limit in the circuit.

- Flap down, flap up. Four real C172S detents: 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°.
- QE
- Rudder. Keeps the nose straight down the runway in a crosswind.

- Restart, instantly. The most used key in the product. No penalty, no loading screen.

Sixty seconds at St Barth

PgUp to full power. Hold the centreline with gentle rudder.

At 55 knots, one short pull on the down arrow. Do not haul. The aeroplane flies itself off.

Climb straight ahead to 1,200 feet, then turn left and look back at the strip you just left.

Fly the yellow gates. They mark the real approach: 61 knots, full flap, over the hill, aiming a third of the way in.

Crash. Read the causal chain, press R. Most people are noticeably better on the second attempt.
What the recorder gives you back
Every crash is decomposed into the sustained deviations that caused it, timestamped against the impact, and reduced to one correction. This is a real debrief from a high sink rate over the col.

Power arrests sink, pitch does not
A sink rate over 800 fpm below 400 ft needs power immediately, then a small pitch change. Pitching alone trades your last airspeed for a stall right where you have no height.

Flight training is sequenced by tradition, not by how a brain actually learns to fly.
The conventional syllabus makes you earn the interesting parts. Weeks of airspace classes and weight-and-balance arithmetic before anyone lets you near a short strip with terrain on final. That order is convenient for a curriculum. It is close to the worst possible order for motivation, and motivation is the thing that actually gets people to a licence.
So BLACKBOX inverts it. You fly Gustaf III on your first session: 646 metres of asphalt, a 17% descent over a hillside, the sea at the far end. You will almost certainly break the aeroplane. That is the point. A crash costs you nothing except the four seconds it takes to read why it happened, and a mistake you understand precisely is worth more than an hour of a lecture you sat through.
The theory is not removed, it is earned. You meet the density altitude chapter on the day the aeroplane refuses to climb out of Lukla, and the stability chapter after the tail has already tried to teach you about it. Every FAA written question in Ground School is tied to something you have felt through the controls.

A destroyed aeroplane costs nothing here and teaches more than a perfect circuit. Restart is one key. Nothing is ever locked behind a pass.

Every crash is reverse-engineered from the flight recorder into a causal chain and exactly one correction, while it is still fresh.
The flight recorder exists because aviation decided, uniquely among industries, that the cause of every accident should be found and published so that nobody repeats it. That is also the fastest way to learn anything.
What this is not. BLACKBOX is not an FAA-approved aviation training device and logs no credit toward a certificate. It builds judgement, the sight picture, and the numbers. You still need an instructor, an aeroplane, and a medical, and this will make every paid hour of those go further.

Pitch & roll
Up arrow lowers the nose. Down arrow raises it.
This feels backwards for about ninety seconds and then never again. It matches the real thing: a yoke pushed away from you puts the nose down. Pitch controls airspeed far more than it controls height. If you are slow, lower the nose.
Left and right roll the wings. In the circuit, twenty degrees of bank is the limit. If a turn onto final needs more, you overshot: go around.
Power
Throttle up, throttle down.
Power controls height. Pitch controls speed. Almost every landing accident in light aviation comes from having those two swapped under pressure. A high sink rate near the ground needs power first, then a small pitch change. Pitching alone trades your last airspeed for a stall exactly where you have no height to recover.
Rudder & trim
Q / E is rudder. Square brackets are trim.
Use rudder to keep the slip ball centred, and in a crosswind to point the nose down the runway in the last few seconds. Never use it to tighten a turn: that is how a base-to-final overshoot becomes a spin.
Trim takes the pressure out of the controls so the aeroplane holds a speed on its own. Trim properly on final and the aircraft defends the approach speed for you.
Flaps & brakes
F extends flap, V retracts it. B brakes, M leans the mixture.
Flaps let you fly slower and descend more steeply without gaining speed, which is the entire trick to a 537-metre runway on a mountainside. Detents are 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, the real C172S positions. Full flap below 85 knots only.
Brakes work on the ground. On a strip this short, be firm and be straight.
View & recovery
C cycles the camera. P pauses. R restarts instantly.
R is the most important key in the product. There is no penalty and no loading screen. The intended loop is fly, crash, read the debrief, press R, fly it better. Aim for a dozen attempts in your first session, not one careful one.
Real controls
Plug in a yoke, throttle quadrant or rudder pedals and BLACKBOX detects and self-calibrates on the first movement. Logitech, Honeycomb, Thrustmaster and generic HID devices are recognised. Axes are read at full resolution, so a real yoke gives you the fine pitch authority that keyboard steps cannot.
